Florida Health Insurance Study: 1 in 5 Floridians Lacks Health Insurance

2006-11-15

According to the 2004 Florida Health Insurance Study, only 60 percent of the hotel and restaurant industry offers insurance, and so, like many small business owners and like many in the service industry, the Flora-Bama is considering ending this benefit.

An estimated one in five Floridians lacks health insurance, or 3.5 million people. That's enough to fill 50 Louisiana Superdomes.

One out of every three people who are self-employed lacks health insurance. Because the uninsured are more likely to wait until their condition is at its worst, they usually show up on the doors of our emergency rooms where they receive the most costly - and often least effective - care.

And usually they stick the hospital with the bill. Or the taxpayers.

The Florida Hospital Association estimates that hospitals statewide face $2.1 billion in uncompensated care annually. So the hospitals must shift those costs - either to their insured patients (whose premiums are increased an estimated 20 percent to cover the costs of the uninsured) or to taxpayers (the state subsidizes hospitals over $1 billion annually).
