State of Florida Health Insurance

In the state of Florida, health insurance is something that over 3.8 million people are going without. This was a big concern for the governor of the state until a program was devised with 6 private health insurance companies to offer competitively priced, high quality health plans for those without insurance. The state of Florida health insurance plan is called Cover Florida and is completely unsubsidized by the state.

Cover Florida is an option that may or may not be right for you so be sure and read this quick guide to learn some of the basics of how the State of Florida Cover Florida health insurance program works and then use the free Florida health insurance quote tool at the top of the page to compare rates and plans from many different companies.

No one option is best for every FL resident so if you find yourself having questions about which option is best for you and your family’s needs be sure and speak with one of our knowledgeable Florida health insurance agents by calling the phone number at the top of the page.

Eligibility for the State of Florida Health Insurance Plan

The eligibility requirements for the Cover Florida plan are relatively simple. The applicant must be without insurance for more than 6 months, unless you are uninsured for one of the specified reasons. If you are no longer eligible for COBRA benefits, are too old for your prior coverage like Kidcare, or lose your employer specific health benefits for any reason, you can be eligible for Cover Florida without waiting the 6 months.

Other requirements include that you must also be a resident of Florida between the ages of 19 and 64 who cannot receive Medicaid or Medicare. Pre-existing health conditions are irrelevant in terms of eligibility. The program is completely portable from one job to another, and even having a job is unnecessary. It is the perfect fit for today’s economic times because there are more people than ever without jobs and working in jobs that offer no benefits.

Cover Florida Coverage

This relatively new plan, which only became available for purchase in January 2009, offers a wide variety of coverage, making the plan a very beneficial one for those who opt for it (although the plan does have some significant limitations). Some of the things covered include:

  • Healthy check-ups
  • Preventative care
  • Prescriptions
  • Testing
  • Hospitalization
  • Office surgery
  • Urgent care
  • Emergency care
  • Durable medical equipment and more…

There are a variety of different plans available from the various companies that are offering Cover Florida policies. These policies that each company must offer include ones that cover catastrophic illness and ones that cover preventative care. The programs are completely privately run and are available by contacting one of the 6 companies that participate in this plan. The rates start off at less than $25 per month.

The companies that offer Cover Florida include:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida
  • Total Health Choice
  • Medica Health Plan of Florida
  • JMH Health Plan
  • Florida Health Care Plans
  • United Healthcare

Only Blue Cross Blue Shield of FL and United Healthcare are available throughout the state. The other four companies are available in select counties only.

For employers, Cover Florida allows them to provide FL health insurance coverage help without being bound to an employer-sponsored program. Employees can take on the cost of the plan entirely. However, employers may want to offer help with premiums or a payroll deduction plan for Cover Florida premiums, in order to make it easier for employees. The big advantage for employees is that if they change jobs or lose their jobs, the insurance is unaffected.

Things That Set Cover Florida Apart

This innovative new FL health insurance program (that the government regulates but does not run or subsidize) has some great benefits, especially for users of the plan. If you have a pre-existing condition, you can get full health insurance benefits. The coverage for the pre-existing condition will take one year to take effect, but it is much better than many other companies, where you are automatically rejected for a pre-existing condition. The portability of the plan means you never feel tied to your job because of the health benefits offered there. There are also incentive plans built into Cover Florida plans that eliminate co-payments for a variety of preventative care procedures.
